By Bungong Marcel
Serious road sinking around Mbot village – Nkambe Sub Division – Donga Mantung, North West Region – Cameroon, has disrupted People, passengers among others from smooth movement. They have equally been advice to avoid that section of the road due to anticipated disaster.

The Delegate of Public works Donga Mantung told me he is currently negotiating with BOFAS and JERRY SAAL road construction companies for very urgent deviation measures to be taking on the road, this is also in line with the recommendation from the Participatory follow up Committee meeting of (Public Investment Budgets) BIP Donga Mantung that took place in Nkambe Thursday 2nd August 2018.
Vehicles especially those above 10 tonnes are strongly advised to avoid that section of the road
This is not the first time that section of the road is sinking. In 2004, the road sank and the Government took some measures just by diverting the section. Car owners abandoned the deviation after the sinking stops.
As of now locals around the spot suspect some serious quaking lead to the Landslides disaster. The cracks continue to expansion or opening daily in Mbot Village around the Tabenken Junction.

Considering the urgency and importance of the road, the Delegation of Public Works Donga Mantung, collaborators and actors has assured that they will be on the section of the road as from this Friday 3rd August 2018 for deviation measures in other to easy moment and avoid the unforeseen. The Delegates said, measure also would be put in place to block the sinking road at both ends to avoid any further danger and any casualties.
According to ABANDA Marcel of Justice Assembly, he said if the road cut off completely, the effects will includes loss of property value, disruption of transportation routes, medical costs in the event of injury etcetera. Explaining to the people that gather around the area, he said, landslide is any geologic process in which gravity causes rock, soil, artificial fill or a combination of the three to move down a slope, maybe trigger by slow weathering of rocks as well as soil erosion, earthquakes and volcanic activity. “In most of the places earthquakes are a major cause of landslides”.
He continued that landslides occur when masses of rock, earth material, or debris flows move down a slope due to gravity. It can occur on any terrain if the conditions are right, and cause significant damage and casualties to people and property. Justice Executive Director stated that, almost every landslide has multiple causes. Slope movement occurs when forces acting down-slope (mainly due to gravity) exceed the strength of the earth materials that compose the slope. Causes include factors that increase the effects of down-slope forces and factors that contribute to low or reduced strength.

On what to do after a landslide, this reporter who has also been working on disaster prevention and mitigation has advised the people leaving around the area to stay away from the slide area considering that there may be danger of additional slides, he advised them to listen to the local radios or television stations for the latest emergency information, watch for flooding, which may occur after a landslide or debris flow considering that floods sometimes follow landslides and debris flows because they may both be started by the same event, check for injured and trapped persons near the slide if any, without entering the direct slide area if the magnitude is high. He said in related cases, locals should direct rescuers to their locations and help a neighbor who may require special assistance - infants, elderly people, and people with disabilities. Marcel said, elderly people and people with disabilities may require additional assistance. People who care for them or who have large families may need additional assistance in emergency situations. In cases of heavy landslides, he continued that they should look for and report broken utility lines and damaged roadways to appropriate authorities, indicating that reporting potential hazards will get the utilities turned off as quickly as possible, preventing further hazard and injury. He called on people in such situation to always check the building foundation, chimney, and surrounding land for damage. Damage to foundations, chimneys, or surrounding land may help you assess the safety of the area and replant damaged ground as soon as possible since erosion caused by loss of ground cover can lead to flash flooding and additional landslides in the near future.
Marcel advised them to seek advice from a geotechnical expert for evaluating landslide hazards or designing corrective techniques to reduce landslide risk. A professional will be able to advise any victim or victims of the best ways to prevent or reduce landslide risk, without creating further hazard.

For the case of Mbot, very few people leave around the slides area.
